| Foreigners visiting on holiday come back to stay for good |
| Within the last four months foreigners have bought 860 residential premises in Alanya’s Mahmutlar resort. |

With an increasing flow of foreigners coming to the Mediterranean town for its fresh air, nature and quiet surroundings, the number of foreign property owners is expected to rise sharply in the next couple of years. In Mahmutlar 1,500 residences were sold to foreigners in 2006. The nationalities most interested in buying housing in the town of 15,000 are typically Irish and Dutch prices for housing vary from 125,000 to 200,000 euros. Mahmutlar Mayor Alaattin Çakır said there are currently 10,000 residential premises under construction that will be sold to foreign buyers. Çakır explained that foreigners pay more attention to the finer details within the properties they buy. Their attention to detail is good news for the city’s housing market, since it forces the real estate sector to increase in quality, the mayor noted. “For the past year we have had many requests for premises by foreigners. The real estate sector in our resort has entered a period of rapid growth. For most houses in construction, agents take deposits. In other words, these residential premises are being built upon special request.” He added that real estate sales are expected to bring 1.5 billion euros to the resort town. But despite the construction boom, the resort won’t build, develop and pave over every last blade of grass, as some believe has been the case in Turkey’s other resort hot spots. Noting that the resort is not losing green areas due to construction, Çakır added: “In spite of the fact that 10,000 residential premises are being constructed, because of our resolve in preserving and protecting green areas they have not vanished. On the contrary, the number of green areas has increased.” Mehmet Görmüş, who works in real estate, said there has been a boom in sales in the last six months and that foreigners coming to Mahmutlar are usually fascinated by its serene environment. Carnellis Euwe, 48, a Dutch citizen who started living in Mahmutlar after buying a property, came to the resort for the first time in 1998 for holiday. Fascinated by the climate, nature and people’s hospitality, Euwe decided to settle here. Marrying a Turkish woman a short time later, Euwe bought a house in Mahmutlar. Horst Reithel, a German citizen who came to Alanya for holiday and visited Mahmutlar as a tourist, said his fascination with this area made him decide to settle down here. “ |
